Protecting Iowans from the financial risk of nuclear power
When private investors balked at the financial risk of investing in new nuclear power plants, MidAmerican Energy tried to pass the cost of new nuclear power plants onto ratepayers in Iowa - with no limit on how much Iowans would have to pay, no guarantee that a nuclear power plant would ever reach operation, and no possibility of refund. In coalition with other consumer advocacy groups like AARP, and environmental groups like the Environmental Law and Policy Center, Iowa PIRG successfully stopped lawmakers from passing this nuclear boondoggle. Instead of nuclear power, Iowa PIRG helped to identify the cost-benefit of a clean energy portfolio that promotes energy conservation and renewable energy options.
While MidAmerican Energy continues to push for this upfront bailout for new nuclear power - we continue to speak out with a voice of reason for the benefit of consumers, and encourage our decision makers to choose better options for a clean, cost-effective and safe energy future.
